Steve & Jan

Sunday, February 22, 2026

After time itself whispered, “Alright, it’s your moment.”

Their Story

A love 25 years in the making

It started when Steve came by to check on Jan after she’d lost Al. It was out of the blue, a simple kindness, completely unexpected. As Jan remembers it: “I thought, okay, well, that was nice of you.”

Then came the night Steve got dressed up for a wedding — only to realize he had the date wrong. All suited up with no place to go, he stopped by Jan’s instead. They sat and talked for a real long time. And he just kept popping up.

He helped around the house. He mowed the lawn. Twenty-five years later, he’s still mowing that lawn. Steve will tell you he chased her for twenty-some years and she finally gave in. They set February 22nd as the day it all began.

Most people assumed they were married already. As Steve likes to point out, by common law they’ve probably been married three times over. Now, on their anniversary, they’re making it official — not because they need to, but because a love this enduring deserves to be celebrated.

Favorite Memories

In their own words

How it started

“He had gone to a wedding and stopped by here unannounced in his suit. And we sat and talked for a real long time.”

He got the date wrong — showed up two weeks early, all dressed up with no place to go. So he went to Jan’s. Best wrong date ever.

San José del Cabo, Mexico

“We were trying to go to the beach and we went for a long walk on the beach, which was kind of fun too down there.”

One of their earliest adventures together — sun, sand, and the beginning of a lifetime of travels.

Paris, France

“We walked from the Arc de Triomphe all the way down to Notre-Dame. Along that walk, we stopped into a shop and this is where she bought her dress — the one she’s gonna wear in the wedding.”

A February stroll through Paris that, years later, would come full circle on their wedding day.

Home

“He just kept popping up. Didn’t you, honey? Now he’s been doing that lawn for 25 years.”

What started as a kind gesture became a lifetime. He never really stopped showing up.

A Toast from the Best Man

Words from Jeff Paulson, Steve’s Brother

Good Afternoon! It is SUCH a privilege to have the opportunity to say a few words about my favorite older brother, Steve, and his bride, Jan.

Steve and Jan’s life path hasn’t always been straight. Both of their lives have had detours, surprises, and lessons. And for the past 25 years — a second chance.

By the time we reached this stage in our lives, we know who we are. We know what truly matters. We know that love isn’t about perfection. It’s about partnership. It’s about kindness on ordinary days. It’s about showing up — bothering for each other, even when things aren’t easy.

We have all witnessed how Jan and Steve show up, not only for each other, but for each other’s families. And as we are witnessing today — their families showing up for them.

Caser, Shaker, Suz and Jeffrey, thank you for embracing my brother Steve. Your long time support of their relationship has helped solidify their union. Amanda and Deidre, since the day you were born, you have been the apple of your father’s eye. And the two of you are his legacy. It’s wonderful that you are both here today to support your father and Jan, and celebrate this important moment.

The love between Steve and Jan isn’t young love. It’s better. It is love that has been tested and measured by life. Love that understands the value of time and commitment. Love that chooses every day to walk forward, together — Forever!

Jan, thank you for loving my brother in the many ways — both big and small — that you do. It is beyond feelings and emotions. Steve, I have never seen you more at ease and at peace. And I am very happy for both of you.

So please — let us raise our glasses to companionship, to laughter, to health, family and friendships. And most importantly — today, to Jan and Steve. Cheers.
