A love 25 years in the making
It started when Steve came by to check on Jan after she’d lost Al. It was out of the blue — a simple kindness, completely unexpected. As Jan remembers it: “I thought, okay, well, that was nice of you.”
Then came the night Steve got dressed up for a wedding — only to realize he had the date wrong. All suited up with no place to go, he stopped by Jan’s instead. They sat and talked for a real long time. And he just kept popping up.
He helped around the house. He mowed the lawn. Twenty-five years later, he’s still mowing that lawn. Steve will tell you he chased her for twenty-some years and she finally gave in. They set February 22nd as the day it all began.
Most people assumed they were married already. As Steve likes to point out, by common law they’ve probably been married three times over. Now, on their anniversary, they’re making it official — not because they need to, but because a love this enduring deserves to be celebrated.
